To track AI search engine citations, save each answer with its exact prompt and run conditions, extract every cited URL, and report citation incidence out of the completed answers in a disclosed sample. A backlink checker alone cannot do this job, because the event lives inside a generated answer.

The basic unit is not “AI authority.” It is inspectable:

The domain was cited in 3 of 9 completed answers for this prompt cluster.

That count does not establish a universal position or predict the next answer. It gives you a source pattern you can verify and act on.

Separate a citation from a mention

An assistant can name a brand without linking to it. It can cite the brand’s documentation without recommending the product. It can recommend a competitor while citing a third-party directory. Track these events in separate fields.

A mention and a citation are separate events Three scenarios show that answer events and source events are independent: a brand can be named without a link; its documentation can be cited without a recommendation; and a competitor can be recommended while a third-party directory is cited. MENTION AND CITATION ARE SEPARATE EVENTS ANSWER EVENT SOURCE EVENT M Brand appeared Own domain cited An assistant can name a brand without linking to it. A mention records who entered the answer. A citation records which source supported it. Keep both events—and their exact context—in separate fields.
FieldQuestion it answers
Brand appearedWas the brand named in this answer?
Own domain citedDid any citation resolve to the tracked domain?
Exact cited URLWhich page supplied the evidence?
Citation contextWhat statement or answer section did the source support?
Competitor appearedWhich alternatives entered the answer?
Third-party sourceWhich external domain supported the category response?

A single “visibility score” can conceal all six. The source register keeps the reason for the citation attached to the answer that used it.

Step 1: define the question panel

Choose questions tied to real decisions: category discovery, problem diagnosis, comparisons, objections, compatibility, and risk. Store the exact wording and give each prompt a stable ID.

Do not build the panel entirely from brand-led questions. “Is Acme a good platform?” measures an answer after the brand has already been supplied. A neutral question such as “Which platforms fit a small agency that needs exportable citation evidence?” tests unaided inclusion more honestly.

Cluster prompts by intent before sampling. A domain may be a common source for educational answers and absent from product comparisons. That is more useful than a blended total that hides where the citations occurred.

Step 2: preserve collection conditions

For every run, record:

  • exact prompt and prompt version;
  • tested engine or product;
  • disclosed model, search mode, or relevant setting when available;
  • timestamp and market or location setting when controlled;
  • completed, failed, or blocked status;
  • raw answer;
  • every displayed citation URL; and
  • the answer text or claim each citation supports.

Keep each collected engine and product surface visible because retrieval and citation behavior are not interchangeable. Brandvane’s current subscription fresh checks sample one OpenAI API answer per approved question. They do not provide an automatic OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity panel. Research into DataForSEO’s recorded answer sources is separate from fresh sampling; see current AI features.

Run important prompts more than once. Repetition can reveal that one URL appears across samples while another was incidental. It reduces the influence of one unusual answer, but it does not make the sample universal.

Step 3: normalize URLs without erasing detail

Keep the raw displayed URL, then add normalized fields for analysis:

  • registrable domain;
  • canonical URL when it can be established;
  • path;
  • source owner: brand, competitor, publisher, community, directory, or other; and
  • HTTP or access status checked on the review date.

Do not discard the raw URL after normalizing it. Query parameters, fragments, redirects, and alternate page versions can explain why two citations appear different. Domain-level counts help find repeated sources; URL-level records tell an editor which page actually needs review.

Treat inaccessible or malformed citations as observations too. Label the review outcome instead of silently deleting the row.

Step 4: report two denominators

Citation reporting needs answer coverage and citation incidence.

If 23 of 27 planned samples returned usable answers, state that coverage. If the tracked domain appeared as a citation in 6 of those 23 answers, report 6 of 23. Do not imply that four failed samples lacked the citation; no usable answer was observed.

Useful rollups include:

  1. answers citing the tracked domain out of completed answers;
  2. answers citing each third-party domain out of completed answers;
  3. citations by prompt cluster;
  4. citations by engine;
  5. exact URLs cited more than once; and
  6. brand-absent answers in which a named competitor or recurring source appeared.

Count answers containing a domain when you want incidence. Count raw citation links only when you explicitly want link frequency. One answer with five links to the same site is still one answer citing that site.

Step 5: turn source gaps into review queues

A citation gap is not simply “they have a link and we do not.” Review why the source helped answer the question.

For each recurring source, inspect:

  • the claim it supports;
  • whether it provides original data, definitions, specifications, comparisons, or corroboration;
  • whether your site answers the same need directly;
  • whether the cited page is current and accessible in rendered HTML; and
  • whether the appropriate next test belongs on your site or on a legitimate third-party source.

The observable result might be “the same directory was cited in 5 of 12 brand-absent answers.” The next action might be to improve an eligible profile or publish a clearer first-party specification page. The observation does not prove that either change will cause a future citation.

Step 6: keep traffic and crawling out of the citation count

A cited URL can receive no click. A referred visit can come from an answer outside your panel. A crawler can fetch a page that never appears in an answer.

Report those events in separate lanes:

  • sampled citation: a recorded answer displayed the source;
  • verified access: suitable server or edge evidence shows identified infrastructure requested the URL; and
  • AI-referred human visit: analytics recorded a session attributed to an assistant source.

The Brandvane measurement method explains the claim boundary for each lane. Joining them too early creates claims the underlying systems do not support.

A citation register you can audit

A spreadsheet is enough to begin. Use one answer table and one citation table connected by a sample ID.

Answer table: sample ID, prompt ID, engine, model or mode, run time, status, raw answer, brand appearance, competitors.

Citation table: sample ID, displayed URL, normalized URL, domain, source owner, surrounding claim, review status, notes.

This structure lets a reviewer move from “the domain was cited in 8 of 20 answers” to the eight answers and the exact pages. It also prevents a long answer with many links from being mistaken for many independent samples.

What citation tracking cannot establish

No tracker can observe every private answer, every prompt variation, or every future citation. A prompt panel is not a census of assistant usage. Citation order is not a durable search rank. A citation does not prove endorsement, accuracy, a human click, or causal impact on revenue.

It can establish a documented pattern inside a disclosed panel and window. That is enough to identify recurring sources, weak page coverage, and testable gaps.

For the evidence framework, see how Brandvane measures AI visibility. Automated weekly AI reports for ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews are coming soon; the planned reports will keep the two surfaces separate and show completed-check counts.

The short version

Track answers first and citations second. Preserve the prompt, raw response, exact URL, source context, engine, time, failures, and both denominators. Analyze source recurrence by answer—not just the number of links. Then turn the repeated gaps into tests whose outcome you can observe in a later disclosed sample.
