The most affordable SEO toolkit is the one that answers your next business question at a cost you can sustain. A small business may need to find a few topics and improve existing pages. A startup evaluating a market may need competitor research. Those jobs do not necessarily require the same subscription.
Start with your own website data, add keyword discovery, and pay for deeper research when it resolves a specific decision. This guide explains that approach and where Brandvane fits. We make Brandvane, so this is a disclosed workflow comparison, not an independent ranking or a claim that we have tested every competing product.
Match the tool to the question
| Question | Starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Which searches bring attention to my website? | Google Search Console | Query and page filters, time range and missing data |
| What related keyword ideas should I investigate? | Google Keyword Planner or a keyword research tool | Country, date, access requirements and metric definitions |
| Can I research keywords and competitors inside my assistant? | Brandvane | Supported client, research credits, row limits and exports |
| Do I need larger datasets or a specialized workflow? | Evaluate a dedicated SEO platform | Exact feature, data coverage, export limits, seats and total price |
Keep your raw exports. A tool can be inexpensive per month yet costly in time if you cannot take its evidence into the next stage of the work.
Start with your own website and a small idea list
Google Search Console helps you examine how your site appears in Google Search. Use it to find relevant queries, understand which pages receive impressions and review changes over time. It does not reveal every keyword a competing website ranks for.
Google Keyword Planner supports keyword discovery and advertising planning. Check its current account requirements and geographic settings. Treat advertising forecasts and advertiser competition as advertising measures; they do not directly tell you how difficult an organic ranking will be.
Ahrefs also provides free SEO tools, including keyword and backlink tools. These can be a starting point for occasional lookups. Check the individual tool’s current limits before planning a recurring workflow around it.
You can combine these sources manually. The small-business keyword research guide explains how to turn a short list into page decisions.
When Brandvane fits the budget
Brandvane is designed for people who want bounded research inside a compatible assistant. You can investigate keywords, selected competitors, keyword gaps, referring domains and Google results, then save CSV or Markdown evidence.
At the time of writing, the SEO plan is $29 per month, with 900 SEO credits and five separate fresh AI checks. Pro+ is $59 per month, with 2,200 credits and 20 fresh checks shared by the owner and one teammate. Your assistant’s subscription and usage are separate. Confirm the current pricing and limits before buying.
Unused SEO credits carry forward and can be used during an active paid subscription. Fresh AI checks reset each paid billing period and do not roll over. Account and shared safety limits can pause new work even when allowance remains.
Here is a planning example using the current research costs. It is not a promise of results or a new paid test:
| Research action | Number of requests | Credits each | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Related keyword research | 4 | 5 | 20 |
| Inspect Google results | 6 | 1 | 6 |
| Research a selected competitor’s keywords | 2 | 5 | 10 |
| Export completed saved results | As needed | 0 | 0 |
| Example research batch | 36 credits |
The keyword and competitor requests each return up to 25 rows. A small batch is useful for choosing a few pages; it is not equivalent to an unlimited database export. Quotes show the proposed charge before you authorize work.
Is Brandvane an Ahrefs or Semrush alternative?
For a specific keyword or competitor research task, it may be an option to evaluate. Treat “alternative” as a question about your workflow, rather than assuming two products have equivalent databases and features.
Write down the five actions you use today. For each, compare the required market, amount of data, freshness, export format and reporting needs. Then check whether the replacement actually completes that action at the required scale.
Brandvane is not presented as a feature-for-feature replacement for a complete SEO suite. If you need capabilities such as large historical datasets, specialist local tracking or a particular reporting integration, verify those separately before changing tools. You may find a small research tool complements an existing platform rather than replaces it.
What if the budget is under $50?
First decide whether that means an SEO subscription alone or your entire workflow. Brandvane’s $29 SEO plan is below $50, but a separate assistant subscription, taxes or other services can change your total. The $59 Pro+ plan does not fit that subscription ceiling.
If you only need occasional ideas and your own search performance, begin with the free tools and a spreadsheet. Add paid research when you can name the question it will answer. If you already work in an assistant, a connected tool may reduce manual copying; the value depends on how often you use it.
Do not add a subscription just to collect more keywords. Build a first page brief, check that you can export the supporting evidence and decide whether you can repeat the process comfortably.
Evaluate one real task before expanding
Choose one seed phrase, one market and one decision. Compare the returned data, missing fields, ease of interpretation and saved output. Avoid judging a tool from a sales-page feature count alone.
